Is PET plastic same as HDPE?
February 17, 2025PPS (Polyphenylene Sulfide) plastic is a high-performance thermoplastic polymer known for its excellent chemical resistance, thermal stability, and electrical insulating properties. The raw materials used to manufacture PPS plastic are crucial in giving it these exceptional characteristics.
1. Monomers
- The primary raw material in PPS production is dichlorobenzene and sodium sulfide.
- These two monomers undergo a polymerization reaction to form PPS resin.
- Dichlorobenzene: Typically, para-dichlorobenzene (p-DCB) is used, as it provides the necessary benzene ring structure for PPS.
- Sodium sulfide: This reacts with dichlorobenzene to introduce sulfur atoms into the polymer chain, creating the essential sulfur-based backbone of PPS.

2. Polymerization Process
- The raw materials are combined under specific conditions, such as high temperature and pressure, to initiate a nucleophilic substitution polymerization reaction.
- This process leads to the formation of polyphenylene sulfide.
3. Additives
- Catalysts: Catalysts, often in the form of metal compounds, are used to promote the polymerization process.
- Stabilizers: Chemical stabilizers are added to enhance the heat and chemical resistance of PPS.
- Colorants and Fillers: To modify the appearance and mechanical properties of PPS, colorants and fillers such as glass fibers or carbon fibers may be added.
4. Solvents
- Solvents like dimethylacetamide (DMAc) are used during the polymerization process to dissolve raw materials and control the reaction.
The raw materials in PPS plastic, primarily the combination of dichlorobenzene and sodium sulfide, provide the polymer with its strong, durable properties, making it ideal for high-performance applications.
